Lahore, September 2025 – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched the Punjab Relief Card to support families devastated by the recent floods. The decision comes after weeks of debate between coalition partners over how aid should be delivered. While PPP pushed for using the Benazir Income Support Programme, the PML-N government has decided to distribute assistance through its own digital relief card system.
Thousands of families who lost homes, crops, and livestock will now receive direct financial aid.
Why Was the Relief Card Introduced?
Maryam Nawaz explained that Punjab needed a transparent and quick system to reach the affected families. By using a digital card, the government aims to make payments directly without delays or middlemen.
What Support Will Victims Receive?
Under the new programme:
- Families whose houses were completely destroyed will get Rs1 million.
- Families with partially damaged houses will get Rs500,000.
- Farmers with up to 12 acres of land will get Rs20,000 per acre for destroyed crops.
- Compensation of Rs500,000 per animal will be given for livestock losses.
How Will the Relief Card Work?
The Punjab government has mobilised 2,200 survey teams with more than 10,000 members, including officials from agriculture, livestock, revenue, and district departments, as well as support from the Pakistan Army. These teams will record losses through a digital portal to ensure transparency.
Maryam Nawaz personally inaugurated the Flood Survey Campaign and administered oaths to survey teams, highlighting the seriousness of the effort.
What Is the Timeline for Relief?
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed all authorities to speed up rehabilitation work. He also ordered the National Highway Authority to immediately restore the M-5 Motorway section damaged by floods.
Officials said that once the surveys are completed, payments will be processed quickly through Punjab Relief Cards.
Impact on Flood-Hit Families
During this relief operation, people across Punjab may see:
- Faster delivery of aid without waiting for months.
- Direct cash support for housing and livestock recovery.
- Help for small farmers to restart agricultural production.
- Restoration of damaged infrastructure including roads and bridges.
Final Words
The launch of the Punjab Relief Card marks one of the biggest provincial relief drives in recent years. While challenges remain due to the scale of the disaster, the government has promised to provide timely assistance and ensure that no affected family is left behind.
