Karachi, September 2025 – The Sindh government has announced that it will roll out Pakistan’s first state-run electric vehicle (EV) taxi service by December this year. The project is designed to provide eco-friendly, affordable, and safe transport options in major urban centers, with Karachi as the first city to benefit.
What Did Officials Announce?
The decision was finalized in a meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also oversees the information and transport departments.
“The Sindh government will be the first in Pakistan to operate a state-run EV taxi service. This reflects Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision of safe, modern, and sustainable public transport,” Memon said.
Special Focus on Women Passengers
- In the initial phase, part of the EV taxi fleet will be reserved for women.
- This continues Sindh’s focus on gender-sensitive transport, following the Pink Bus Service and Pink Scooty Scheme.
- Officials said these dedicated services will ensure safety, affordability, and convenience for female passengers.
Why Is the EV Taxi Service Important?
Authorities explained that the new initiative will:
- Reduce vehicle emissions and improve urban air quality.
- Lower dependence on petrol and diesel amid rising fuel costs.
- Provide a modern and safer alternative to conventional public transport.
- Support Pakistan’s long-term green mobility goals.
Final Words
With the EV taxi service set to launch in December, Sindh is taking a major step toward sustainable and inclusive transport. By combining eco-friendly technology with women-focused initiatives, the government hopes to set a model for other provinces to follow.
