Gilgit-Baltistan is going to polls on 7 June 2026, Sunday. After months of delay, people in Skardu, Gilgit, Hunza and other areas will finally vote for their 24 assembly seats.
What happened so far
.Elections were first planned for 24 January. But heavy snow and harsh weather forced the GB Election Commission to postpone them. In April, they announced the new date – 7 June. That’s just 5 days away now.
Campaigning is at its peak. Big names are in GB. Nawaz Sharif landed in Gilgit and met PML-N workers. Aseefa Bhutto addressed a rally in Skardu. PPP, PML-N, PTI and other parties are all pushing hard in the last phase.
There’s tension too. PTI leaders like Salman Akram Raja were stopped at the border and told they can’t enter GB for campaigning. Police say they’re following orders. Parties are complaining, but the Election Commission says code of conduct will be strictly followed.
Why this vote matters
GB hasn’t had a full assembly for a while. Without elected reps, local problems get stuck. Roads, water, schools, jobs – everything waits for approval from Islamabad. People just want their own voice back.
More than 5,000 Punjab Police personnel will be on duty for security. Local govt elections are also scheduled for 14 June, after 20 years.
Final Thought
7 June isn’t just a date on the calendar. For people in GB, it’s a chance to decide their own future. They’ve waited, they’ve faced delays, and now they want to vote without interference.
Elections are the basic right of every citizen. GB deserves that too. If voting goes fair and peaceful, it’ll be a win for democracy. Now the ball is in the Election Commission’s court – just make sure every vote counts and every voice is heard.
